Bad News

20170215_114155              What do you do when friends and family receive bad new? I mean, the news is not just bad, it is devastating. The apple of your eye, your pride and joy, your grandchild is sick. The illness is not just terminal, it is debilitating, it’s wasting, and how do you tell this beautiful child. Why God? WHY? How can YOU let this happen?  The divorce is becoming final, the home is being sold, the words of accusation and cruelty still ring in tender ears. Dreams have died, children are divided and loss of hope make the heart sick. Why God? WHY? How could this happen? I just walked in the door at home, I was not sure why I was compelled to write about bad news. I can see Becky on the couch in tears. A cousin has lost a baby; At 39 weeks! The baby was moving, there was life in the womb on the way to the hospital.  A simple checkup and time to schedule delivery in the next few days. The doctor finds no heartbeat. I can’t even wrap my brain around this kind of pain. Why God? WHY? How is this real? How do we find joy?

What do you do? You cry, you mourn with those who mourn. You follow the example of Jesus who wept. Yes, Jesus wept at the knowledge that his friend died. He wept because He feels our pain. Jesus did not offer explanations and empty platitudes, neither should we.  Emmanuel, God with us just showed up. Listen, laugh, remember, allow the flow of emotions. God is not offended by our grief. Hebrews 5:7-9 tells how Jesus “offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death.” Jesus saw the prize. He followed the Fathers plan. God said that from what Jesus suffered He was made perfect. Eternal perfection made completed through pain. It is beyond my ability to understand, but I believe Jesus really, really loves me because of that cross.

Jesus offers no explanation for the pain of this world but He does offer us hope. He says in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” I have overcome the world, there is a new world coming. A day is coming, a day when every tear is wiped away. A time to heal every hurt. A new place to call home, eternal, unshakeable, rich in relationships and founded in Love. Watch the reunions on this day. Can you see the momma holding again the living hand of the child that was lost? Yes, God was able! Can you see the smile on Jesus face? Bodies are healed, disease is gone, minds and spirits are freed forever from the effects of sin. The grandchild is whole and holding the Fathers hand. Oh, the cross was good. Dear friends and family laughing, clapping, smiling, yelling “Welcome home!”. No more divorce, families are healed, divisions are done.   Can you hear the applause of heaven? Can you see Jesus with his big hanky out as he personally wipes away every tear? Oh, the cross was good. Can you see the Father smiling? Can you see it? Can you picture that day? Do you see the faces of those you long for? Believe it! It’s “A Reason for JOY!”
